Featured Projects Brownsville Sports Park The Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation contacted us to help them create a central play area in the community's new sports park. They wanted a structure that would be exciting for kids and set their park apart as a regional destination. They opted to include our 25 foot Mega Tower. With 230 square feet of play space and decks and slides up to 14 feet, the Mega Tower serves as an exciting vertical focal point for this structure.
Park Place was up for the challenge. Together with input from Down by the Border, a local advocacy group for children with special needs, we created a Hybrid design that combined the verticality and excitement of a Mega Tower with an increased level of accessibility achieved through stacked play. Inspired by one of its members who could not access other play structures, Down by the Border requested that the playground be designed so that children of all abilities could be a part of the action, not sidelined to other areas of the park. We created a design that incorporates a series of ramps wound through the heart of the structure, creating a more inclusive environment for wheelchairs. Off of the wheelchair accessible decks, we incorporated both challenging climbers and manipulative imagination panels to encourage all kids to play in the same space.
To ensure that the main play structure would be accessible via wheelchair, we installed a bound rubber mulch safety surfacing around the perimeter.
ADA guidelines stipulate that a play structure should have ground level components equal to 33% of the total number of elevated components. The playground at Brownsville Sports Park was designed to exceed guidelines and has ground level components equal to 58% of elevated components. Ground level components on the main play structure include: therapeutic hand rings, power peddler-cycling motion for arms, fun-fone communication centers, and musical bells.
The design also incorporates a ground level play house composed of interactive and imaginative panels.
With creative thinking and cooperation between designer and client, Brownsville Sports Park is now home to a truly one of a kind playground. |
